Best time to visit Jambiani, Zanzibar

Zanzibar has two rainy seasons and two dry seasons — understanding the pattern will help you plan the ideal trip.

The dry seasons (the best time to visit)

June to October is the long dry season — consistently sunny, breezy and low humidity. This is peak season, and for good reason. Temperatures sit around 25–28°C, the ocean is calm and visibility for snorkelling is excellent. Book accommodation early if you’re travelling in July or August.

December to February is the short dry season. Slightly hotter than June–October, but still lovely. Fewer tourists, lower prices, and the festive atmosphere between Christmas and New Year is special.

The rainy seasons

March to May brings the long rains (masika). Heavy showers, often daily. Some guesthouses close. It’s not ideal for a beach holiday, though prices drop significantly and the island is lush and green.

November is the short rains (mvua ndogo). Usually brief afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain — still workable for travel, particularly later in the month.

Our honest recommendation

If flexibility isn’t an issue, July through September is the sweet spot — perfect weather, calm seas and still not as busy as some of the Mediterranean beach destinations you might be comparing it to. For value without compromising weather, January and February are excellent.
